Hit Australian series set to return to Nine in 2009

The massively popular Underbelly was Channel Nine’s programming centrepiece that helped the previously flagging network re-establish itself as a serious ratings contender.
Overwhelming demand has urged the creation of a second series, which will be officially green lit tonight by Nine CEO David Gyngell.
In a presentation to media buyers and advertisers, Gyngell will announce the follow up to the Melbourne Gangland War drama, a prequel which details the rise to power of many of the characters in the original series.
Gyngell told News Limited he was “really excited” about the new series, and that “The best television drama always warrants a second season, and Underbelly is no exception.”
“It was the best television many of us have seen in a very long time.”
The prequel will focus heavily on the story of “The Black Prince Of Lygon St”, Alphonse Gangitano, who was skillfully portrayed by Vince Colosimo.
Gyngell was confident that the series would be a smash hit like its predecessor.
“It was compulsive viewing this year and we aim to make it compelling in 2009. We’ll have the production team and cast to do just that,” he said.
