CBC to distribute show via BitTorrent

Mar 22

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation will become the first North American broadcaster to be legally distribute its shows via the BitTorrent protocol next week.

Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister pits 144 young Canadians against each other in a series of debates, judged by three former Canadian prime ministers and the current Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. The debates were originally posted on YouTube, and the final show will be aired at 7pm Sunday night (Canadian time) on the CBC’s English language network.

The idea was inspired by a similar action taken by Norway’s NRK (Norsk rikskringkasting AS – translated as Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) to distribute a hit show online while saving on bandwidth costs. CBC plans to create high resolution, DRM-free files, while lower resolution versions will be released for iPods and other portables. Torrent links will be available Monday morning on the program’s website.
